The European Central Bank (ECB) published the initiation of the competition for the design of the next generation of euro banknotes in a statement. The two comprehensive topics have already been selected: European culture and rivers and birds.
The ECB also revealed which historical figures and bird species will be presented. Cultural figures that entered in the narrow selection are Maria Callas, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci and Bertha von Suttner. The species of birds that entered in the narrow selection are creepers, watermen, colony of beekeeper, white gender, colorful avocado and blush.
The design competition is open to graphic designers with residence in the European Union. The panel of independent experts will inspect the applications and choose up to five finalists for each topic. An experienced designer from the national bank of Belgium will represent Belgium into the jury.
The public members will also have the opportunity to give feedback on the designs that have entered into a narrower choice. ECB is expected to make the final decision by the end of 2026. years. The new banknotes will enter the circulation for several years later.
