They justify this move by claiming that the new government in Damascus includes “the most dangerous people in the world.”
“The Israeli military will maintain a presence to ensure that allies of the new regime in Syria cannot fire rockets toward the Golan Heights,” officials told Ynet.
Israeli sources emphasize the need for intelligence control in a zone of 60 kilometers inside Syria in order to monitor and prevent possible security risks. The new Syrian government, led by the former ally of al-Qaeda in Syria, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), according to Israel, poses a serious threat that is being ignored by Western countries.
“The West deliberately closes its eyes and cooperates with the most dangerous people in the world. The Arab states in the region warn of the threat, but the West refuses to listen to them. No one can guarantee that these people will not turn against us, and they represent an extremely high risk,” said the Israeli official.
After Ahmad al-Sharaa (aka Abu Mohammad al-Julani) and HTS took control of Damascus on December 8, Israel deployed its forces to further expand its occupation of the Golan Heights area.
We remind you that parts of the Golan Heights were illegally occupied by Israel during the Six-Day War in 1967. The Separation of Forces Agreement was signed after the October War of 1973, establishing a demilitarized buffer zone between Israel and Syria.
After the Syrian government fell in December, Israeli forces seized additional territory, including Mount Hermon, securing a strategic advantage over Syria and Lebanon. Israeli officials claim they will not allow the presence of Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, or Iranian influence in Syria, saying it is part of their security strategy.
