Basketball players from Vienna and Zadar played an ABA league game, and the Croatian team won with a score of 86:77. But instead of the events on the floor, Europe is buzzing about the hooligan chaos that broke out after the match ended.
The Austrian newspaper Heute reported how it is between 50 and 60 masked hooligansarmed with wooden baseball bats and steel bars, planned a brutal attack on Croatian fans after a game in Vienna on Friday night. The incident happened on the A2 motorway, near Traiskirchen, and the quick intervention of the police prevented more serious consequences.
During the evening, the Viennese police received reports about dozens of vehicles with foreign license plates that were moving towards the Austrian capital. According to the police, there was reasonable suspicion that the goal of those groups was confrontation with the Croatian fans who came to the game.
Around 9:00 p.m., the vehicles were spotted stopped at the stop lane near Lebersdorf. Multiple drivers reported the alleged chain crash, but the police later confirmed that it was a false report.
Shortly afterwards, 15 to 20 cars were spotted on a parallel road along the A2 motorway. Dozens of people got out of the vehicle and tried to approach the Croatian fans over the embankment. They are with them wooden bats and steel rods were foundwhich the police immediately confiscated.
In the end, there was no direct conflict – the hooligans retreated, returned to their vehicles and fled before reaching their targets. During the intervention, there were also reports of burning cars, but they also proved to be incorrect.
However, during the police operation, a traffic accident occurred when a fire truck collided with a car who tried to get out of his way. On that occasion five people were injured.
The police reported that all other reports about vehicle damage and injuries to persons who did not participate in the incident were unfounded, reports Tportal.
