A man armed with a revolver was arrested after causing an incident at a conference in an office building near Union Square in Manhattan, police confirmed.
The gunman raised a loaded gun toward the ceiling, saying he was going to take his own life, according to witnesses and police officers. He was prevented from doing so by an individual who overpowered him. The incident occurred at 124 East 14th Street, in the Civic Hall space, where WikiConference North America 2025 is being held.
The man was registered as a conference participant, officials confirmed. Robert Levine, CEO of RAL, which manages the building, said no shots were fired and police responded quickly.
Lauren Dickinson, a spokeswoman for the Wikimedia Foundation, thanked the organizers and attendees who helped during the incident, stressing that all participants are safe and the program continues.
Due to the incident, additional security measures have been put in place and the police presence will be increased for the remainder of the event. The building, known as Zero Irving, has hosted companies such as Senator Investment Group, Melio Payments and Sigma Computing, among other firms.
As a reminder, in July there was an armed attack at the headquarters of Blackstone Inc. in Midtown Manhattan resulted in the deaths of four people, causing widespread concern in the business community and a re-examination of security procedures at businesses across the city.
