Greece is starting to build a large drone factory

Work has begun to convert an abandoned military factory north of Athens into a large factory that will produce drones for land, air, sea and submarine use, as well as drone destruction systems, Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said, as reported by eKathimerini daily.

Speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony for the new unit near Malacca, Dendias said the annual production of small military drones will increase from 4,000 to around 10,000 a year, with an additional 600 larger drones to be produced annually, BTA reported.

– Unmanned systems and anti-drone systems are a vital element of the new operational mentality, Dendias was quoted as saying.

EKathimerini recalls that Greece has already invested heavily in foreign-made drones as part of a massive, multibillion-dollar military investment program that includes French frigates and fighter jets and American warplanes, as well as an extensive Israeli-style air defense system against missiles and drones.

On Friday, Dendias also emphasized the importance of domestic production.

– We must participate, not only as buyers and users of the system… but also as a country that produces, designs and develops them, he noted.
