The German government intends to make the country a leading hub for sustainable, safe and competitive aviation with a new 15-year strategy, envisaging cutting costs and strengthening research.
The German cabinet is expected to approve the strategy on Wednesday, which sets out short- and medium-term measures for civil and military aviation. The goal of the document is to ensure greater predictability in planning for decision makers, companies, the military and society.
The strategy is based on four pillars: economic competitiveness, technological competitiveness, aviation as a military technology and aviation as a civil security technology, according to the document seen by Reuters.
The document also seeks to prepare the industry for future crises and make aviation more climate-friendly.
German aviation, according to the document, faces a number of challenges, including weaker passenger growth compared to the rest of Europe, rising costs, international competition and geopolitical tensions.
The draft also refers to the coalition government’s plans to reduce air traffic taxes and control fees, as well as to simplify the aviation security system.
It is emphasized, however, that the implementation of the strategy will depend on the availability of the necessary budget funds.
