The Baltic countries claim that it is a matter of provocations, Russian mapping of NATO space or stray drones that activate defense systems and civil protection. Germany has also decided to strengthen its civil protection. New equipment is being purchased and measures are being taken so that citizens can reach shelters as quickly as possible, and it has been estimated that the existing shelters are not sufficient, reports HRT.
The war in Ukraine showed how much modern conflicts and security threats have changed. While drones and advanced technologies are increasingly being used on the battlefields, European countries are simultaneously strengthening their defenses against hybrid threats and possible crisis situations.
– This weapon weighs nine kilograms and carries a thermobaric explosive. It causes a shock wave and extreme temperatures, and the consequence is the destruction of a wider area – said a member of the Ukrainian drone control unit, known by the call sign “Sambist”.
Today, Ukraine produces about four million drones a year, partly in cooperation with Germany. At the same time, European countries are facing increasingly sophisticated forms of espionage and cyber attacks.
– Russia is in our focus, that is an objective fact, because we see that since the beginning of the attack on Ukraine, activities coming from Russian territory have increased significantly – said Alexander Dobrindt.
According to him, in addition to Russian, German infrastructure, state institutions and important companies are also targeted by Chinese hackers and groups from other countries.
Germany therefore increases investments in security, and sees civil protection as an integral part of the defense system.
– We do not consider military conflicts and hybrid threats separately. We have a complete integrated security strategy that includes military capabilities, technological innovations in defense, strengthening the armed forces, but also increasing the overall resilience of society – said defense and security expert Andrea Rotter.
The German government is expanding its network of warning sirens, acquiring a thousand special vehicles, 100,000 field beds and protective equipment, and increasing mandatory food supplies. In the next three years, it plans to allocate 10 billion euros for civil protection, while around 100 billion euros will be provided for defense and armaments.
– This primarily applies to drones of all kinds, but not only to them. We are required to be at the very top of technological development and to introduce it into our units as soon as possible – said Boris Pistorius.
At the same time, in Bavaria, the condition of tunnels, subway stations and garages, which could serve as shelters if necessary, is being checked. Berlin concluded that the existing capacities are not sufficient, so it encourages citizens to a higher level of self-protection, while the locations of public shelters will be available via the NINA application, which in crisis situations would direct citizens to the nearest safe locations, could be heard in HRT’s Dnevnik.
