Two prisoners escaped from a prison in Dijon early this morning after cutting through the bars of their cell with blades suspected to have been delivered by drone, French authorities confirmed. Both are considered dangerous, and one of them is under investigation for attempted murder, according to Euronews.
According to local media reports, citing the Force Ouvriere syndicate, one fugitive is a 19-year-old man charged with attempted murder and participation in a criminal association. Another prisoner, 32 years old, is accused of threats and serious violence against his wife. Both men were placed in the disciplinary department and were in complete isolation. After cutting the bars, they allegedly used blankets to overcome the barbed wire fence.
The FO Justice union announced that it has been warning for months about the deterioration of security conditions in the prison in Dijon. In a post on Facebook, they stated that the administration ignored their appeals and, as they claim, “decided to remain blind to the situation on the ground.”
The incident comes just a week after another inmate escaped from Rennes-Vezin prison during a visit to the planetarium, resulting in the dismissal of the warden ordered by Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin.
Three prison unions have criticized the minister in recent weeks, accusing him of diverting resources to the fight against drug trafficking while ignoring problems within the prison system. They also stated that, according to them, the minister is more concerned with his own image than with essential reforms.
France’s prison capacity has long been under pressure: according to data from the Ministry of Justice in July, there are about 85,000 people in prisons, although the official capacity is 62,509 places. Average occupancy is 135.9 percent, while in 29 institutions it exceeds 200 percent.
