Yesterday, the French judiciary issued an arrest warrant for deposed Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad on suspicion of his involvement in war crimes, particularly in connection with the death of a man of French-Syrian origin in 2017.
Investigating judges suspect Assad of involvement in the murder and attacks on civilians.
Le Parisien newspaper reported that the 59-year-old man was killed when his house in the southern Syrian city of Daraa was bombed by Syrian army helicopters in June 2017. Citing investigators, the paper states that the French judiciary suspects that Assad ordered the attack and provided the necessary funds for it. At the time, the Assad government was trying to take control of Dara from opposition forces.
In 2023, the French judiciary issued a warrant for Assad’s arrest in connection with the chemical weapons attacks. This is particularly true of the severe chemical attacks in the Eastern Ghouta region near Damascus in August 2013. The sarin nerve gas attack killed hundreds of people. Human rights organizations reported more than 1,000 deaths.
