Former Vice President and Minister of Economy of Cuba Alejandro Gil was sentenced to life imprisonment and an additional 20 years in prison for espionage, treason and other crimes, the Supreme Court of Cuba announced.
Gil, who was a close associate of President Miguel Díaz-Canel until 2024, was found guilty of “misleading the leadership and the people, which caused damage to the economy,” as well as “unauthorized handling of confidential information, theft, destruction of documents and making them available to enemy services,” reported El Pais, reports Tanjug.
He is also prohibited from holding any public office, and all his property will be confiscated.
