European governments are late in dealing with the Russian threat and need a “catalyst” to start, is considered General David Petraeus, former CIA director. In his opinion, that incentive could be a recent injury to the airspace of Poland and Romanian Russian drones, writes Corriere Della Sera.
When asked what Russia is trying to achieve these intrusions Petraeus answers: “They are examining the air defense of Poland and NATO. And the Fi-Fuel Complaints are. I think that Russia realizes that this is not achieved.”
Although the incidents caused insecurity and tested the reactions of the federation, Petraeus believes will achieve the opposite effect.
– He will encourage the Allied governments to do what we were to do earlier: to make Ukrainians change the course of war in their favor, to make Ukraine so strong guarantee that the new war becomes unacceptable for Moscow.
He also referred to the perception of the public to some Western countries, including Italy, that the situation is not urgent.
– On the contrary, it is. The fate of Ukraine is the fate of Europe and, in my opinion, the free world. Ukraine shares the principles, values and freedom for which we all fought at different moments. Now the Ukrainians are on the first line of that struggle – Petraeus emphasizes.
He also commented in the discharge in costs, that is, to cheap Russian drones of about twenty thousand euros cause a reaction that costs hundreds of millions.
– These very expensive systems fired very expensive ammunition to break relatively cheap drones. Many were baits, but when they are in your airspace, you don’t know if they are armed or not: you have to knock them down – explains.
That’s exactly what, according to him, it shows that it’s time to change the paradigm.
– Instead of training the Ukrainians, now Ukrainians should share what they know. They developed cheap ways to combat Shaheda. It is time to admit that the largest current innovations in the defense industry of Ukrainian, with several exceptions – claims Petraeus.
He touched economic pressure on Moscow, commenting on proposals on restricting the price of Russian oil.
– We must starve the Russian war economy and take measures against those who support it. It should begin by agreed reduction in the price on which Russia can sell its oil – he believes.
Petraeus admits that such measures could have consequences for both West.
– Of course, if Russian oil was removed from the market, the international price could increase. But today the offer is slightly greater than demand. The best way to avoid chaos in the market would be an increase in the production of OPEC – he said.
He concluded that the fear of oil shock may have slowed down the West, especially now under Biden’s administration, but that the arrival of Trump things are accelerating.
