Influenza surveillance in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, like every season, began in October 2024 and will last until May 2025.

The activity of influenza-like illness (ILI) is of medium intensity in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the 52nd week, in places where regular testing is carried out, influenza type A, subtype H1N1pdm09 was confirmed. The peak of flu activity is expected in January and February.

Influenza immunization is ongoing. Immunization against influenza reduces the risk of serious illness, is safe and free for vulnerable groups. Vulnerable groups are people over 65 years old, residents and employees of homes for the elderly, chronically ill people regardless of age, and pregnant women. There is a great interest in immunization against influenza in FBiH and other citizens.

In the information for Fena, the Institute for Public Health of the FBiH states a number of tips for reducing the negative effect of air pollution on health. It is necessary to harmonize the legal regulations and establish air quality monitoring, in accordance with the requirements of Directive 2008/50/EC and 2004/107/EC, improve the capacities of competent institutions and laboratories for air quality monitoring, establish an air quality information system, as well as improve reporting, according to domestic and international obligations – it is stated.

Since the quality of the ambient air significantly affects the quality of the air in the closed space and that the air in the closed space can be ten times more polluted than the air in the outdoor space, it is very important to pass legislation related to the quality of the air in the closed space and to improve the capacities of the competent institutions and testing laboratories indoor air quality.

In order to prevent acute and chronic diseases, which arise as a result of episodes of increased air pollution, the population is advised to reduce outdoor movement, especially in the morning and evening hours. Until precipitation or strong wind occurs, which will enable better air quality. Chronic patients, but also healthy people, especially children, are recommended to spend as much time as possible in fresh air and in environments with a low level of air pollution, writes from Bosnia Info.

It is especially important that chronic patients, elderly people, children and pregnant women do not stay in smoky and unventilated rooms. Experts do not recommend exercises and running outdoors because in that way, due to deep breathing, larger amounts of air pollutants are introduced into the lungs – he points out.

Among the recommendations is a reduced use of solid fuel, especially coal, which has a poor quality, and when staying outdoors, use protection in the form of standardized protective masks with a filter (chronic patients after consultation with a doctor). Reduce the use of private cars and use means of public transport that do not pollute the environment (trolleybuses and trams), consume as much fresh fruit and vegetables as possible and hot drinks (tea, cocoa, etc.). In the event that they experience a deterioration in their health, chronically ill patients must be under the constant supervision of a doctor – advises the Institute for Public Health of the FBiH.
