At least five people have died in the winter storm that has swept across much of the US, causing school closures, traffic chaos and power outages.
Seven US states have declared a state of emergency: Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky and Arkansas, the BBC reports.
More than 2,300 flights have been canceled and nearly 9,000 delays have also been reported due to the extreme weather caused by the polar vortex of icy cold air swirling around the North Pole.
About 190,000 people were without power early Tuesday in states in the storm’s path, according to Poweroutage.us. Snow and sleet are forecast to continue falling throughout much of the northeastern US during the day, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Although precipitation will taper off then, cold arctic air is expected to maintain icy conditions in parts of the country for several more weeks.
