The Hungarian oil and gas company MOL announced that it is gradually restarting production facilities at the Danube refinery that were not directly affected by the fire that broke out during the night. Fire crews are still on the ground, Reuters reports.
According to the company, the fire has been brought under control, and the security of the area, the investigation into the cause of the incident and the assessment of material damage are currently being carried out. No one was injured in the accident.
Witnesses told Hungarian media that they heard an explosion before the fire broke out. The Danube Refinery is one of the key oil processing facilities in Hungary. The last major technical incident in this refinery occurred in July of this year, when due to a malfunction of the technological equipment, there was the appearance of black smoke and increased burning of gas.
The fire at MOL’s refinery occurred only a few hours after the explosion at Lukoil’s refinery in the Romanian city of Ploiești. Hungarian journalist Szabolcs Panyi pointed out this time coincidence, and the information was confirmed by Ukrainian investigative journalist Anatoly Shary.

The fire broke out in the AV3 crude oil distillation unit at the Szazhalombatta refinery. Tamas Pletser, regional energy analyst at Erste Investment, explained that the unit supplies raw material fractions to other plants in the refinery.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said today that he spoke with the leaders of MOL and said that the fuel supply in the country is safe.
