The alert was sent to local authorities late last month, based on intelligence gathered since early February, ABC News reports.
According to the bulletin, Iran was reportedly considering a surprise drone strike from an unidentified vessel off the US coast, possibly targeting unspecified targets in California. However, it is not known when such an attack could take place or exactly which targets would be hit.
The warning comes at a time of heightened tensions following the Donald Trump administration’s military actions against Iran.
At the same time, U.S. intelligence agencies are expressing concern over the increasing use of drones by Mexican drug cartels, with fears that such technology could be used to attack U.S. security forces along the border with Mexico.
Former intelligence official John Cohen has warned that Iran has connections and a presence in Mexico and South America, adding to concerns about possible drone attacks on US targets.
