The European Union has delivered around 100 tons of emergency humanitarian aid to the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is affected by the Ebola epidemic and difficult access due to security problems.
Aid was delivered to the city of Bunia, the administrative center of Ituri province, through a humanitarian airlift organized by the EU in cooperation with UNICEF. The shipment includes medical supplies, protective equipment and tents for the accommodation and treatment of the sick.
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), a total of 471 cases of Ebola infection have been recorded in Congo and neighboring Uganda, with 84 deaths.
On May 15, authorities declared an outbreak of hemorrhagic fever caused by the Bundibugyo strain, one of the known variants of the Ebola virus. The epicenter of the infection is in the hard-to-reach Ituri province, where poor infrastructure and the presence of armed groups make health intervention even more difficult.
Ebola is spread through direct contact with the body fluids of infected people, and symptoms include high fever, vomiting and bleeding. There is currently no specific medicine or vaccine for this disease that would completely stop its spread in such epidemic conditions.
