Indonesian volcano Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted on Wednesday, exhibiting the cloud of volcanic ash to 10 kilometers in the atmosphere, the country volcanology agency said. Due to the increased activity, the authorities raised the degree of alarm to the highest level.
Volcano, located in the province of East Nusa Tenggara, erupted at 1:35 am local time (18:35 GMT on Tuesday), and the eruption lasted about nine minutes, the geological agency said.

Another eruption was recorded on Wednesday morning at 9:21 pm (01:21 GMT), when the ash is expelled to a height of 8 kilometers, and lasted for about three minutes.
The head of the agency, Muhammad Wafid, said the alert level was erected on Tuesday evening due to “a significant increase in volcanic activity” that was observed on Monday.
The inhabitants living near the volcano should be on caution because of possible volcanic blasts if there is heavy precipitation – said Wafid, warning that the zone in a diameter of six to seven kilos around the volcano should be emptied.
Evacuation of the population
Avelina Manggota Hallan confirmed the local disaster management agency that a dozen of people from the village of Vulcan was evacuated after new eruptions.
She also reminded that the strong eruption of this volcano in November 2024 took 10 lives and damaged thousands of houses, which further increased caution among the local population.
Closed airport
Due to the volcanic activity, the Franciscus Xaverius Seda Airport in Maumere, in the Province of East Nusa Tenggara, will remain closed at least Thursday, the airport operator said through social networks.
Volkan Lewotobi was erupted in August this year, and July, when the delays and flushing and cancellations were recorded, including those from the popular tourist island Bali.
For now, the latest eruptions did not affect the air traffic to Bali, confirmed from the airport there.
Indonesia has more than 120 active volcanoes and is located in the Pacific “Fire Ring”, an area of intensive seismic activity that includes more tectonic plates.
