The President of the United States Donald Trump asked to use his influence and convince Hamas to accept his peace plan in the Gaza belt, said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the transcript announced on Wednesday.
– And during our visit to the United States, as well as in our last telephone conversation, we explained to Mr. Trump in order to come to a decision in Palestine – said Erdogan reporters on return from Azerbaijan.
– On that occasion, he looked for him to meet with Hamas and try to convince them – he added.
Turkey has repeatedly expressed support for Palestinian rights, and Erdogan called Hamas “liberation movement”, which caused tensions with Israel and West. On the other hand, Turkey maintains diplomatic channels and Israel and with western allies, and has the potential role of intermediaries in peace efforts.
The Trump Peace Plan, which includes ceasefire, gap release, hamas disarmning and the gradual retreat for the Gaza, encountered various reactions in the region and the world.
Erdogan did not discover whether contact with Hamas was already established, but he stressed that Turkey is ready to contribute to peace in the region.
