Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has warned that a “cheap truce” between Ukraine and Russia – in which Kiev would be forced to cede territory – would bring “expensive peace” to Europe, Sky News reports.
Eide said such an outcome would create security challenges for generations and put the future of the entire continent at stake. Therefore, he added, Ukraine, its European allies and the US must try to agree on a common position in the negotiations with Vladimir Putin.
“I very much hope that we will have peace in Ukraine and nobody wants that more than the Ukrainians themselves,” Eide said.
“But I worry that we could be pushing things towards, in quotation marks, a ‘cheap truce’, which would lead to a very expensive peace.”
