Doning an organ in BiH has always been a taboo topic. But therefore, patients may be suffering that one organ can save life. Thus do good work, you save lives.
Live donor transplants are somewhat worked, but the so-called Kadvereign transplants, ie organ donation when brain death occurs, are not yet at a satisfactory level.
According to the donor network, Bosnia and Herzegovina was at the bottom of the scale on the donation of the bodies in Europe. The situation is now a little better, we are no longer the last, but we are still at the bottom of the ladder.
Only talked about this important topic with the President of the donor network in BiH, Dr. Halimom Resic.
– According to our regional register in which 30 dialysis centers participate, in BiH in 2024. 49 transplants have been done, and this year 13 transplants.
These are mainly adapted from living relatives or compatible donors. A very small number of those persons who have experienced brain death, and thus are the bodies donated – says Dr. Resic.
How to pick up the world about donating an organ after death?
There is still a stigma in BiH regarding the donation of the organ after the brain death. The big shift would happen if people’s consciousness would change, and thus many lives would be saved.
– We are working for 20 years on raising awareness in people through various campaigns. Understand that this makes good work and when there is no more you. But without the help of the system and institutions we can nothing.
Everything falls into the water. I can say that in campaigns, the FBiH Ministry of Civil Affairs helped us.
In the coming period, we have in the plan of numerous quality campaigns and promotion of donor. We expect the support of the Ministry, but indeed, all these years, the only and right support was our media – says dr. Resic.
How much life can we save
– From one person who experienced brain death, eight transplants can be done. We are witnessing, unfortunately, how many young people, Gina in BiH and these organs go to the country.

Dr. Resic emphasizes that the signing of a donor card does not represent any legal obligation nor the register of those persons are kept. It’s just a matter of your good will that you spread that idea. Let’s show the humanity and in that because we love to be represented as a nice people.
To our question What do the donor card we carry with us is because if we happen to us, the body donation will decide our family, Dr. Resic says:
– We really had enough cases when despite the card, the family did not agree to donation to the organ. There are such cases. But lately, when that donor card finds, I really have to emphasize that, the family respects the desires of patients, ie. of your loved ones.
However, doctors always ask family if they find a donor card, so if your family does not agree, it is really respected. Many, for example, did not even know that their family member was a member of that card. They decide. That’s understandable.
That is why the family would respect your desire, it is important that you know that you are a signatory to a donor card, that you really want to donate your organs, that this is no “hir”, and to openly discuss the family members.
