US President Donald Trump will be part of the World Cup draw ceremony at the Kennedy Center in Washington, where he will receive the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize.
During the ceremony, where the countries will find out their opponents in the first group stage, Trump, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will participate in the ceremonial draw, writes Politico.
It will be the first time Trump and Carney have appeared together since a standoff over Canadian trade policy angered Trump. Today will be the first live meeting between Sheinbaum and Trump.
The two-hour program will open with a performance by Andrea Bocelli, one of Trump’s favorite opera singers, who performed in the Oval Office earlier this year, followed by remarks from FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Robbie Williams and Nicole Scherzinger will also perform.
Infantino will then present Trump as the recipient of the Peace Prize. Trump will receive the award and address from the stage.
– The president is a perfect host. Is there another president who can host the world better than Donald J. Trump? – said Andrew Giuliani in an interview on Thursday before the draw.
After the heads of state have finished their part of the program, the ceremony will switch to the official draw, which will be moderated by the host and assistants. Balls bearing the names of the countries will be drawn from the bowls to form 12 groups of four teams each for the 2026 competition.
The ceremony will be closed by the Village People, the disco band whose song “Ymca” became a trademark at Trump’s campaign rallies and inauguration.
