Novak Djokovic, the best tennis player of all time, once again attracted a lot of attention from the public after he spoke openly about the reasons why he resented the authorities in Serbia.
Additional reactions followed his decision to move with his family to Greece, to Glyfada near Athens.
The Djokovic family received a so-called “golden visa” after purchasing a luxury property worth more than 800,000 euros, which is the minimum investment amount for obtaining a residence permit in that country.
Djokovic has not been on good terms with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and the current government for a long time, mostly because of his support for student protests.
However, as he says, one of the key points of difference was his public support for Croatia during the 2018 World Cup.
“When I publicly supported Croatia at the World Cup in 2018, many in Serbia criticized me, even the highest representatives of the government,” said Novak.
He explains that his decision was driven by emotions and family roots.
“Part of my family is from Croatia. That’s how I feel in my heart. How can I support someone who is far away from me, and not a neighbor with whom I share family ties and many similarities?”, he said.
His words re-opened the debate in Serbia, but Djokovic stands by his position, his emotions and origins are more important to him than political expectations.
