Those gathered wore masks with the image of the president and the Israeli flag, with the message: “You are the leader, you are guilty.”
Other protesters wore Netanyahu masks and orange jumpsuits resembling prison uniforms.
The protest was organized under the slogan “Pardon = Banana State”, and the participants stand behind a large pile of bananas with the inscription “pardon” displayed on it.
Netanyahu asked Herzog for clemency on corruption and fraud charges, arguing that such a move would be in the public interest. The trial on that indictment has been going on for five years.
Herzog confirmed that he had received the 111-page written request from Netanyahu’s lawyer. The president’s legal team will first give their opinion, after which Herzog will make the final decision.
“The President’s office is aware that this is an unusual request with serious consequences. Once all relevant opinions are obtained, the President will carefully and responsibly consider it,” Herzog’s office said.
Netanyahu is accused of providing political favors to wealthy individuals in exchange for gifts and/or favorable media coverage. He rejects all the accusations, claiming that it is a politically motivated “witch hunt” directed by the media, police and judicial institutions.
