The total damage and economic losses caused by the wildfires in Southern California are estimated at 250 to 275 billion dollars, the meteorological firm Accuweather announced today.
Preliminary estimates exceed the extent of damage from the 2020 fire season, said the firm’s chief meteorologist, Jonathan Porter, warning that the wildfires in the Los Angeles area could become the worst in modern California history if more buildings burn, the NBC TV network reported.
At the same time, some of the most expensive real estate in the USA is located right on the stretch from Malibu to Santa Monica, and many houses in that area are worth several million dollars.
If those estimates are confirmed, the extent of the damage would exceed the losses caused by Hurricane Helena in 2024, which were between $225 billion and $250 billion, and those caused by the wildfires in Maui in 2023, which were estimated between $13 billion and $16 billion, according to NBC.
At least 24 people have died in the fires in the Los Angeles area so far, and dozens more are missing.
