The UN climate conference in Brazil will be extended to the weekend because the representatives of around 200 countries did not reach a consensus on the disputed issues yesterday.
The most heated debate was about whether to support the plan to abandon coal, oil and gas. More than 80 countries are in favor of a “road plan” that would lead to the cessation of the use of fossil fuels, but this has met with great resistance, especially oil-producing countries, reports HINA.
The conference, which was supposed to end yesterday, continues into the weekend, which is not unusual for annual global climate talks. The move away from fossil fuels was one of the most contentious issues at the two-week conference in the Brazilian Amazon city of Belem.
For days now, nations have been arguing over the future of fossil fuels, the burning of which emits greenhouse gases that are by far the biggest cause of global warming.
