Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China expects the eventual agreement to end the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran to be sent to the United Nations Security Council for confirmation, in order to gain international legitimacy.
In a speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Wang Yi emphasized that China supports the continuation of dialogue and respect for the ceasefire among all parties involved in the conflict.
He emphasized that it is important that the affected parties remain committed to peace and the continuation of negotiations, with the aim of stabilizing the situation in the Middle East.
According to him, any future agreement must have the support of the UN Security Council in order to be legally and politically sustainable at the international level.
China, which chairs the UN Security Council this month, has called on the body to take a more active role in maintaining global peace and security.
Tensions in the region escalated after earlier US-Israeli military clashes with Iran, followed by mutual attacks and regional instability.
The ceasefire, with the mediation of international actors, entered into force at the beginning of April, while negotiations on its final formalization are currently underway.
