Chelsea defeated Barcelona 3:0 at Stamford Bridge in the fourth round of the Champions League.
The scorers were Jules Kounde’s own goal in the 27th minute, Estevao in the 55th minute and Liam Delap in the 73rd minute. Barcelona played with one less player from the 44th minute, after stopper Ronald Araujo received the second yellow card.
The hero of Chelsea’s victory was left back Marc Cucurella, who played a brilliant game and completely neutralized Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s young star.
Cucurella (27) is a child of Barcelona – he arrived at La Masia as a 14-year-old and spent eight years there.
Now it was he who led the triumph against his former club, stopping his teammate from the national team, 18-year-old Yamal.
His success was especially celebrated by his club and national team colleague, the goalkeeper of Chelsea and Spain, Robert Sanchez.
After the game, Sanchez said:
“Where is Yamal? So in Cucurella’s pocket!”.
He then added a message to the young Barca striker:
“Everybody looks great until they get to England”.
When asked if Barcelona were favourites, Sanchez just laughed.
“Favourite Barcelona? We are favourites”.
He also applauded Cucurelli when he was named man of the match.
Cucurella revealed how he managed to stop Yamal:
“I was trying to make the game as difficult as possible for him. I directed him towards the middle, where Caicedo was waiting for him. I shouldn’t have left him alone on the right side. It’s his weaker leg, but you never know with such players”.
