The crash happened in the westbound lanes of I-70 near the city of Terre Haute during snowy weather conditions. Indiana State Police spokesman Matt Ames said no one was seriously injured.
In a follow-up announcement, about five hours after the initial announcement, Ames said all vehicles involved in the crash had been removed from the road.
“People, if you can stay home, stay home. You just have to drive smart when it starts to snow — slow down, buckle up, so we can all be safe,” he said.
Over the weekend, the storm system brought more than 12 inches of snow and strong winds across the American Midwest, and thunderstorms across the South. About 53 million people, from South Dakota to New York, were under winter weather warnings.
More than 4,600 flights in, into or out of the United States were delayed Sunday and 576 flights were canceled. More than 25% of the delays involved flights to or from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
Illinois State Police reported nearly 500 traffic accidents in the Chicago area Saturday, with 66 of the crashes resulting in injuries.
