The Republic Day public holiday in Turkey is celebrated on October 29 to commemorate the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.
The republic was proclaimed by military leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who was then elected by the Grand National Assembly of the country as the first president of modern Turkey.
The Turkish Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Emin Akseki, pointed out in his speech that on this occasion, they show great respect and gratitude to the founder of the Republic Ataturk, his comrades and everyone else who made it possible.
He pointed out that his country has played a constructive role in the past hundred years, promoting peace, stability and prosperity in its surroundings and beyond, including in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Akseki stated that the relationship between Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina is unique, shaped by centuries of shared history, culture and mutual understanding.
He emphasized his unequivocal support for the independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and his commitment to strengthening the close ties between the peoples of the two countries.
– In accordance with these principles, we remain committed to improving our bilateral cooperation in all areas – said Akseki.
The occupation of Ottoman lands after the First World War plunged the Turkish people into a deep struggle, and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk went to Samsun on May 19, 1919 and started the war of independence.
After that war ended in victory, Turkey’s independence was internationally recognized by the Treaty of Lausanne signed on July 24, 1923.
