Carney said that while “the world is falling apart as the U.S. transforms its commercial relationship,” working closely with Canada will strengthen both countries.
Amid the ongoing trade war with the US, Carney has pledged to double Canadian exports to other markets over the next decade and signed more than 20 economic and security deals last year.
Following President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Canada as the 51st country, Carney described Canada’s ties to the US as “weaknesses that need to be corrected.” He said the United States has fundamentally changed its approach to trade, raising tariffs to levels last seen during the Great Depression.
In January, Carney referred to “American hegemony” in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, saying greater integration with major powers had created “vulnerabilities to be exploited.”
In New York, however, the Canadian prime minister struck a more conciliatory tone, describing the US as “the most dynamic, resilient and inventive country in the world”.
He said that the fundamental values of the United States – freedom, democracy, justice and openness – should continue to serve as guides for its future and the future of the world.
Carney acknowledged that while they have had disputes over the years, the United States and Canada have always worked to resolve them. He said a strong Canada will “help make America great again” and called for greater cooperation between the two countries in industries including aluminum, autos and key minerals.
