The opening of the bridge between Canada and the US over the Detroit River, whose commissioning was previously questioned by US President Donald Trump, has been delayed due to “unresolved issues”.
In a statement released Thursday, ahead of a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Friday, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority said “Canada and the United States have agreed to delay the opening of the bridge to provide sufficient time to resolve any outstanding issues.”
The Gordie Howe International Bridge is jointly owned by Canada and the US state of Michigan, and was expected to open to traffic later this month.
Its opening has been in limbo for months after President Donald Trump, a Republican, demanded in February that Canada transfer at least half ownership of the bridge to the US federal government and accept other, unspecified demands. The move was part of his many forays into cross-border trade between the two countries.
Invitations to the opening ceremony were sent this week after talks between Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Democrat, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
