While European countries are looking for new ways to reduce their dependence on Chinese raw materials, Bosnia and Herzegovina is increasingly mentioned as one of the possible future suppliers of antimony, one of the most important critical minerals today.
Antimony is a metal that is not particularly known to the general public, but it has an extremely important application in the military industry, the production of ammunition, electronics, batteries, semiconductors and fire-resistant materials. According to an earlier study published in the scientific literature, existing geological data indicate a potential of about 200,000 tons of antimony in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The authors of that research state that additional research and eventual exploitation could place Bosnia and Herzegovina among the significant European producers of this mineral.
Even more interesting is the conclusion of the analysis according to which Bosnia and Herzegovina, if it develops the identified resources, could become the leading producer of antimony in Europe and one of the ten largest producing countries in the world.
Such a possibility is no longer only a subject of scientific evaluations. At several locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, specific research projects have already been launched, backed by international mining companies.
Antimony is most often used as an additive to other metals to increase their strength and resistance. Its application is particularly important in the production of ammunition, military systems, electronic components, batteries, solar panels and special alloys. It is also used in the production of fire-resistant materials, which is why it plays a significant role in the construction and automotive industries.
Due to the growth of geopolitical tensions and the accelerated development of the dedicated industry, the demand for antimony has been growing strongly in recent years.
The global antimony market is currently dominated by China, which controls most of the world’s production and processing of this metal. This represents a serious challenge for European countries that are trying to reduce their dependence on the import of strategic raw materials. This is precisely why the European Union is increasingly focusing on the development of its own sources of critical minerals, among which is antimony.
The importance of this metal became clearer to the general public after China, as the world’s largest producer, limited its export. This put antimony at the center of the global trade conflict between Beijing and the West. In such circumstances, interest in the mining potential of the countries of the Western Balkans, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, is growing.
Scientists singled out Srebrenica, Rupice near Vareš, Čemernica near Fojnica and Podhrusanj near Čajnič among the most promising antimony areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It is particularly significant that new research by international mining companies is taking place in the area of Srebrenica and Vareš. This shows that scientific estimates of antimony’s potential are increasingly matching investor interest in the field.
One of the currently more interesting projects is being developed by the Australian company Regener8 Resources. This company recently completed the takeover of the Srebrenica North project, which includes 80 square kilometers of exploration space.
In that area, modern geological research focused on silver, copper, zinc, lead and antimony is planned. The company states that systematic modern research has not been carried out on most of that area for more than half a century. Although the project is still in its initial phase, it is one of the largest new research ventures in the mining sector of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
An even more significant project near Srebrenica is being led by the Canadian company Terra Balcanica. Unlike Regener8 Resources, Terra Balcanica is already conducting exploratory drilling at the Viogor-Zanik project near Srebrenica and is publishing concrete results.
The company recently announced that it discovered high-grade silver-antimony mineralization at the Čumavići and Brežani sites, with the presence of zinc, lead and gold. Company president Aleksandar Mišković stated that Terra Balcanica wants to become one of the few suppliers of critical metals, especially antimony, for the European market.
One of the most important pieces of information is that the company plans to prepare the first preliminary resource estimate as early as next year. This could bring the first modern estimates of ore quantities in this area and show the real potential of the Srebrenica mining district.
In addition to Srebrenica, scientists also see great potential in the area of Rupic near Vareš. Although the active mining projects in Vareš today are mostly associated with silver, zinc and lead, the scientific work of Rupica places it among the most promising antimony fields in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The advantage of Vareš is the fact that there is already an active mining infrastructure in the area, which could facilitate the possible production of antimony in the future, if significant quantities of this metal are confirmed.
The combination of geological potential, increasing demand for critical minerals and the arrival of international research companies shows that Bosnia and Herzegovina could become an important producer of antimony, and according to some estimates, the largest in Europe.
If the geologists’ estimates are confirmed, antimony could become one of the most important mineral resources of Bosnia and Herzegovina and open a new development perspective for the domestic mining sector.
