President Joe Biden is expected to unveil new sanctions targeting the Russian economy this week, according to a US official, as part of measures to support Kiev’s war effort against Moscow before Donald Trump takes office.
The measures come as the Biden administration is also preparing new $500 million in military aid to Ukraine that will include air defense missiles, ammunition for surface-to-air weapons and equipment to support F-16 fighter jets, a U.S. official said who wanted to remain anonymous, reports Reuters.
The return of President-elect Donald Trump to the White House on January 20 raised hopes for a diplomatic solution to end the Russian invasion, but also fears in Kiev that a quick peace could come at a high price.
Trump’s advisers have proposed proposals to end the war in Ukraine that would effectively allow Russia to retain large swaths of the country for the foreseeable future.
Biden aides say they want to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position on the battlefield to give them bargaining power for possible talks with Russia this year.
