President Joe Biden on Sunday issued a proclamation on Carter’s death, ordering American flags to be flown at half-staff for 30 days. He also declared January 9, 2025 as the National Day of Mourning.
During the evening he appeared on television from St. Croix, part of the US Virgin Islands where he and his family spend the holidays, to remember the accomplished man both politically and personally, noting, “Jill and I have lost a dear friend.”
He added, however, that what he finds most extraordinary about Carter is the fact that millions of people around the world share that sentiment right now – whether they knew him or not.
Biden praised the renowned humanitarian as a man of word and deed, suggesting, “We should all do well to be a little more like Jimmy Carter.”
On behalf of the nation, he said to Carter’s family: “We send our heartfelt condolences, in gratitude for that life of service — both in the Oval Office and in the decades after.”
Finally, Biden noted that Carter had been laid to rest:
– I believe he is happy and back with Rosie – referring to Carter’s beloved late wife Rosalynn Carter, who died a year ago, in November 2023.
He previously released a statement calling Carter “a man of great character and courage, hope and optimism.”
With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, create peace, advance civil and human rights, promote free and fair elections, care for the homeless, and always stand up for the least among us. According to Biden’s statement.
