US President Joseph Biden has decided to officially block the planned sale of the American steel plant US Steel, which was supposed to be bought by the Japanese company “Nippon Steel”, worth 14.9 billion dollars, a source said today.
The decision to block the deal came despite opposition from some senior advisers who are concerned it could harm US-Japan relations, the Washington Post newspaper, which first reported the decision, said.
A White House spokesman declined to comment on the reports, while a source told Reuters the decision was expected.
A spokesperson for “Nippon Steel” also refused to comment on the report, reports Tanjug.
US Steel previously issued a statement expressing its hope that “Biden will do the right thing and follow the law by approving a transaction that clearly improves US national and economic security.”
Biden has said he wants US Steel to remain domestically owned and operated by American companies, while President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to block the deal after he takes office on January 20.
