The 1968 Grenoble 30 km cross-country Olympic champion Franco Nones will carry the Olympic flag at the opening of the Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo on Friday.
– This is a great honor and I am glad that I was chosen, said Nones, who celebrated his 85th birthday on Sunday.
In addition to bringing the first gold medal to Italy in cross-country skiing, Nones ended the dominance of the Scandinavians and competitors from the Soviet Union in that sport with his triumph in Grenoble in 1968.
On the 58th anniversary of winning Olympic gold on February 7 in Val di Fiemme, the first cross-country skiing competition is scheduled at the ZOI Milano Cortina 2026.
Along with Nones, Italian speed skater Martina Valcepina (33) will carry the Olympic flag at the opening of the Games in Cortina.
