At least 70 people were killed in northern Nigeria today when a fuel tanker overturned and exploded, the National Emergency Management Agency said.
Most of the victims were poor local residents who rushed to the overturned tanker to try to catch the spilled fuel, reports Reuters.
The tank then caught fire, leading to an explosion.
Husaini Isah, of the National Emergency Management Agency, told AP that search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Given the absence of an efficient rail system for transporting goods, fatal accidents are common on most major roads in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, according to Reuters.
