Ter Stegen arrived in Girona on loan from Barcelona as a replacement for Dominik Livaković, who returned to Dinamo, but was injured already in his second appearance, in the game against Oviedo. Although at first the injury did not appear to be serious, additional medical examinations showed that surgery was necessary.
This is ter Stegen’s third serious injury in the last two years, after knee and back problems. Girona did not announce the exact duration of the recovery, but Spanish media reported that the break could last between three and four months.
Ter Stegen left Barcelona in January after losing his place to Joan Garcia, with hopes of fighting for a place in the German national team and an eventual call-up to the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico. This injury has now further reduced his chances.
