Sarajevo, November 22, 2025 – In Sarajevo, in the organization of the Academia Foundation, thanks to numerous donors, the “Dr. Azra Spahić and Dr. Alma Suljić” scholarships were awarded in memory of two daughters, sisters, young doctors, friends, colleagues who were tragically killed at Marijin Dvor by an intoxicated driver who was driving under the ban, i.e. whose driver’s license was revoked due to offenses committed earlier.
25 candidates, medical students from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, applied for the competition. The committee had a very difficult task, to choose female students who reflect Alma and Azra’s spirit, determination and commitment to education, art and social activism.
The scholarships were awarded to Fatima Aletić and Dalila Majetić, students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sarajevo. The life and legacy of dr. Alma Suljić and others. Azre Spahić, their love, knowledge, abilities, commitment, results, the mark they left were the reason for the Academia Foundation to issue a public call for the third time in a row and award two scholarships in memory of two young lives that were cut short too soon.
“It is a great pleasure and honor for us this year to participate in the organization of the process, selection and awarding of scholarships named after our female colleagues. This is an opportunity to continue awarding scholarships and to preserve the memory of our female colleagues. That is one purpose. And the other purpose is to support the best. I am proud that I had the honor of being part of this activity!” – said Ismar Ećo, president of the Academia Foundation, who stressed that he is always enriched by the candidate’s motivational letters, which show that female students not only study well, but also have high ambitions.
Adnan Spahić, brother of dr. Azre Spahić thanked the gathered and emphasized that the tragedy brought together a large number of people, but that the lives of Alma and Azra should be the topic of conversation.
“Even though we are all gathered around the tragedy, we are here to continue the path of charity that Alma and Azra walked, and what better way than to support the young and ambitious!” Spahić said.
atima Aletić is the winner of the “Dr. Azra Spahić” scholarship. She did not know her, but as she points out, the mark left by these two young doctors also reaches her generation.
“Rahmetli Dr. Azra was a medical student and an artist. I recognized in her what I wanted to be. I believe that knowledge is valuable only if we share it. This scholarship is not only a support for my education, but a confirmation that it is worth being persistent, responsible and dedicated. Alma and Azra live in us who have the courage to continue where they left off…”- said Fatima.
Dalila Majetić, winner of the “Dr. Alma Suljić” scholarship, emphasized that she is aware that every scholarship is a recognition, but this one is not just an award. She is a legacy.
“We study anatomy, physiology, pathology, but from the life of Dr. Alma, we learn something that does not exist in textbooks. How knowledge becomes meaningful only when we put it at the service of man. And that is exactly why this scholarship, which bears her name, is not only recognition for me, but direction, a guide!” – said Dalila.
Everyone who had the luck and privilege to meet dr. Azru et al. Alma will remember them forever, and the scholarships are just one of the ways in which they live on and contribute to science and the community even after death.
dr. Azra et al. Throughout their lives, almas left a mark of good wherever they appeared. In addition to education, they were active in numerous fields, organized and realized humanitarian actions, helped younger students, loved art. They were exemplary children, the best students, students who made the Faculty of Medicine proud.
