Nine leading European aviation institutions have joined forces under the umbrella of the “Europe for Aviation” (E4A) initiative to reduce long-standing fragmentation in air traffic management and create a more efficient, digitally connected European airspace.
At the Airspace World 2026 fair in Lisbon, representatives of the European Commission, EUROCONTROL, the European Aviation Safety Agency and the SESAR program presented a joint vision of modernization.
The goal is to improve capacity, safety and sustainability, and reduce costs and delays.
Europe currently operates one of the most complex airline networks in the world, but differing national systems and regulations often cause inefficiencies.
According to forecasts, air traffic in Europe could increase by more than 40 percent by 2050 compared to the pre-pandemic level, which requires significant changes in the way flights are managed.
Digitization is key to the transformation – advanced automation, satellite navigation and real-time data sharing enable more direct routes, reduced emissions and better coordination between different airspace users, including drones and new mobile technologies.
