Authorities have announced that 46-year-old Travis Turner, who went missing last week, is now a wanted fugitive facing serious charges related to child pornography, writes the BBC.
Police in Virginia said Tuesday that Turner was charged with possession of child sexual abuse material and using a computer to recruit minors. Officers visited his home in Appalachia last Thursday as part of the investigation, but were told he was not there. An extensive search has been ongoing since then, using drones and search and rescue teams.
“VSP’s top priority is to safely locate Turner; he is now considered a fugitive,” a police spokesman said, adding that 10 warrants had been issued for his arrest. The police announced that additional charges are possible.
Travis Turner worked as a physical education teacher and head football coach at Union High School. The Wise County School District confirmed to US media that they are aware of the allegations against one of their employees and that he has been placed on administrative leave.
“The individual remains on leave and is not permitted to be on school property or have contact with students,” said Wise County Public Schools Superintendent Mike Goforth. “The department will continue to work with law enforcement as this process unfolds. Because this is an active legal case involving personnel, we are unable to comment further.”
Despite the scandal and the disappearance of the coach, the Union High School team continued the season without defeat. With an impressive record of 12 wins and 0 losses, they advanced to the Virginia regional finals. According to the missing persons database, Turner was last seen wearing a gray hoodie, sweatpants and glasses.
