“Today we pledge to end decades of violence and bloodshed and usher in a new era of harmony and cooperation between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda,” Donald Trump said ahead of the signing ceremony in Washington, attended by Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
Asked by reporters when military troops would leave Congo, Trump said: “I think you’re going to see that very soon, and very, very soon.”
Trump assessed that Tshisekedi and Kagame are “great leaders”.
“I think you’re going to see immediate results. I’m confident that’s going to happen,” Trump added.
The agreement is the result of several weeks of diplomatic negotiations, with the support of the State Department, with a focus on ending armed conflicts and encouraging economic stabilization in the region.
The peace framework, as outlined earlier in draft negotiations, also includes a ceasefire, a review of security arrangements and the potential establishment of new economic partnerships in the mineral-rich region that has been plagued by decades of conflict.
