Bosnia and Herzegovina singer Alen Islamović performed on July 11 in Kraljevo, on the day of the 31st anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, and on that occasion he issued a statement in which, among other things, he stated that he was addressing the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially the survivors and families of the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.
“I am addressing you on the occasion of my recent performance in Kraljevo, which took place on July 11, the day when Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the entire civilized world, remembers the genocide in Srebrenica. I want to be completely open and honest before all of you: holding a concert on this painful date is my big omission and reckless mistake. Although the dates of tours and performances are often agreed months in advance by the organizers and management, this in no way amnesties me from my personal responsibility. “As a man who was born and raised in this country, I had to personally check the calendar, pay attention to this date and insist on rescheduling or canceling the performance. I am deeply aware that my action sent the wrong message and hurt those who are grieving,” he stated.
He pointed out that his connection with Bosnia and Herzegovina, his native Bihać and its people is deep and unbreakable.
“I am aware of what my Bihać has gone through and what families have gone through, and even my own. That pain is forever engraved in my heart. I hereby send my deepest and most sincere apology to the mothers of Srebrenica, the families of the victims and all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina. My intention was never disrespect, but what I believe in all my life – that culture and music connect people, spread understanding and build bridges between us”, he emphasized.
He stated that “we are all only human and as such, unfortunately, we make mistakes”.
“But the most important thing is to learn something from those mistakes. A person learns while he is alive, and so do I at the age of 69. With deep respect and eternal respect for all the victims,” concluded Islamović, writes Liberation.
