Artificial intelligence company Anthropic said Thursday that it has raised $65 billion in a new round of funding, taking the Claude model maker’s valuation to $965 billion — more than its main rival OpenAI, creator of ChatGPT.
The latest round of funding confirms Anthropic’s position as one of the most important players in the field of artificial intelligence, while the startup led by Dario Amodei is attracting attention for its advanced programming capabilities and cutting-edge models.
Anthropic’s rise is based on a strategy of focusing on generative AI for enterprise clients, rather than for a broader consumer audience, which was the initial approach of its rival OpenAI.
The company was founded by former OpenAI employees, including CEO Amodei, and pays special attention to AI security, while also rapidly developing new products to stay competitive in the AI race.
“This funding will help us respond to the historic demand we’re seeing, stay on the cutting edge of research, and bring Claude to more places where work is happening,” said Anthropic CFO Krishna Rao.
The nearly $1 trillion valuation puts Anthropic ahead of OpenAI, which was valued at $852 billion in March. Both companies could go public this year.
Ahead of them is Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which in February integrated his AI company xAI, whose shares could start trading as early as June 12, with a target valuation of about $1.75 trillion – which would be the largest IPO in history.
Anthropic’s funding round was led by major Silicon Valley investors: Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital.
The investment includes $15 billion in previously promised investments by the cloud giant, including $5 billion from Amazon.
Semiconductor companies Micron, Samsung and SK hynix – whose products are key to the development of this technology – also participated as strategic infrastructure partners.
The company announced that Claude is now the first “frontier” AI model available on all three major cloud platforms in the world: Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
The funding comes as Anthropic is engaged in a high-profile legal dispute with the US Department of Defense after the department labeled it a supply chain risk – in what the company called unconstitutional retaliation for refusing to give the military unrestricted access to its AI models.
Mythos is a powerful, next-generation AI model from Anthropic, with advanced cyber security capabilities.
Because of this, Anthropic restricted access to Mythos only to security partners, rather than making it publicly available.
