A truck overturned in Afghanistan, at least 18 dead

At least 18 people, including ten children, died when a truck overturned in Laghman province in eastern Afghanistan. Another 30 people were injured in the accident, the local police said.

According to the police, five women were among the victims, and all the victims were Afghan civilians who had recently returned from exile.

All the injured were transported to nearby hospitals, while several of them are in critical condition.

The accident happened in the Surhakan area, in the Qarghayi district, on the highway that connects the capital Kabul with the eastern provinces of the country.

According to initial information, the cause of the accident is most likely inappropriate speed and careless driving, while the exact circumstances will be determined during the investigation.

Traffic accidents remain among the leading causes of death in Afghanistan, mainly due to careless driving, overloaded vehicles, poorly maintained roads and insufficiently developed traffic infrastructure in this war-torn country, China’s Xinhua news agency said.
