The impact significantly damaged a fuel receiving building a few meters away from where “large amounts of nuclear material” are stored, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, which added that it had been informed by Ukraine, Reuters reports.
Kyiv’s state atomic agency Energoatom announced that no spent fuel was stored in the building at the time of the attack. The fire that broke out was extinguished, and no injuries were reported.
Russia has not publicly commented on the alleged attack on the facility, which is located about 15 km from the Chernobyl power plant, the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster.
– An extremely critical infrastructural object – and an extremely insidious Russian attack – Zelensky wrote on Xu, adding that Russia used the Shahed attack drone.
– So far, there are no readings that exceed normal background radiation levels. But there is certainly an increase in Russian insolence, which crossed the border a long time ago – he added.
In a statement, the IAEA said a team would soon visit the site “to review the impact”.
In February 2025, a Russian Shahed drone damaged the protective structure above the Chernobyl reactor, which was destroyed in an explosion and core meltdown in April 1986. Russia, which regularly attacks Ukrainian cities and infrastructure with drones and missiles, has denied responsibility.
Kiev and Moscow also exchanged accusations over the attack on the Russian-occupied Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine, the largest in Europe.
