The European Handball Federation (EHF) has decided to increase the number of clubs in the Champions League from 16 to 24 from next season. The EHF added that despite the increase in the number of clubs, the number of matches will remain the same in order to respect the international competition calendar.
According to the new format, the clubs in the first phase of the competition will be divided into six groups of four teams each, the first two will advance to the second round of group play, in which they will be divided into two groups of six teams each, and the first four teams from that second stage will continue the competition in the quarterfinals.
The winners of the quarter finals will win going to the final tournament which will traditionally be played in Cologne.
Clubs that are eliminated in the first phase of the competition move to Europa Leagueand the teams that finish in fifth place in the second phase of the group stage will move to the eighth finals of that competition.
The reform of the Champions League is the result of an in-depth, months-long process in which clubs, leagues and national associations were involved. The level of quality is so high that the competition will remain very competitive and will increase attractiveness for fans, media and partnerssaid EHF president Michael Wiederer.
32 clubs will play in the Europa League next season, just like these, but the qualifications for that competition will be abolished.
The distribution of the number of places by national associations for both the Champions League and the Europa League will be determined in December.
The EHF added that the reform of European handball competitions is planned for the 2027/28 season.
