The death toll from floods and landslides in Sri Lanka has risen to 410, the Disaster Management Center said on Tuesday, with 336 people still missing after a week of heavy rains.
More than 1.5 million people were reported to be affected by the worst natural disaster to hit the country since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
In Sri Lanka, the monsoon season usually lasts from June to September.
However, this year it was exacerbated by two separate cyclonic storm systems: Ditwah and Senyar. Ditwah first formed as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. It made landfall in Sri Lanka on Friday, causing massive flooding and mudslides, before moving back across the gulf.
In Indonesia and Thailand, Senyar formed in the Malay Strait, a strip of water that connects the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.
Senyar brought heavy rains, strong winds and waves to the Indonesian island of Sumatra and at least eight southern Thai provinces. The storm also hit neighboring Malaysia, killing two people.
