“Three thousand kilometers, so that everyone could use rail routes within Ukraine for free: Lviv-Kiev, Kyiv-Dnieper and any other (route),” Zelensky said in a daily video message on Saturday, adding that details of the program were still being worked out.
He said that the railways should show the citizens of Ukraine that the budget allocated to this state-owned enterprise really serves society.
The government will also develop a program to ease winter costs, similar to last year, when 14 million Ukrainians received just over 20 euros in aid.
“We will definitely limit the price of gas this winter, there will be no increase, and neither will the price of electricity for private households,” the president promised.
The price of a kilowatt-hour of electricity is currently slightly less than 0.09 euros. Following Russian drone and missile attacks on power plants and substations over the past week, electricity is available in large parts of the country for only a few hours a day.
Even before the Russian invasion, which has been ongoing since February 2022, Ukraine was the poorest country in Europe in terms of per capita income, according to estimates by the International Monetary Fund. Almost half of the Ukrainian state budget is financed by foreign loans and aid funds.
