“Let’s build a sustainable BiH III” is the name of the three-day international conference in Mostar, which gathered more than 200 participants and over 70 panelists from BiH and the region. The organizers of the conference are the International Academy of Sustainable Development and the Fund for Environmental Protection of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, and Adnan Šabani, Minister of Spatial Planning, Transport and Communications and Environmental Protection of Zenica-Doboj Canton, was among the panelists and presenters.
Topics such as sustainable development, waste disposal and environmental protection were the focus of the conference, and the Zenica-Doboj canton, thanks to the efforts of the Government and the relevant ministry, in the last two years has made significant strides in solving issues on which the future of life on Earth depends.
– Waste management, the challenges of declaring protected areas and sustainable tourism are current projects that the Ministry and the Government are dealing with. I particularly highlighted a unique project in Bosnia and Herzegovina – after the creation of a register of home fireplaces and an insight into which environments are the most threatened and where we need to act as a priority, we are starting to replace home fireplaces. The project is worth eight million euros. When it comes to improving air quality, the Zenica-Doboj canton has done the most, which was confirmed by the participants of the conference – Minister Šabani said.
The Environmental Protection Fund of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina helps local communities and cantons through professional and financial support, while the Zenica-Doboj Canton allocates millions of dollars for local communities, public utility companies and the non-governmental sector dealing with nature protection for the third year in a row.
– Waste represents one of the biggest challenges in environmental management in the world, including in our canton and the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thanks to positive experiences and legal solutions from the region, we will be even more active in decarbonization, waste management and green transition. At the same time, we must continue to raise citizens’ awareness of the importance of nature conservation and sustainable tourism – stressed Minister Šabani.
The international conference “Build a sustainable BiH III” is a continuation of the conference “Zenica Waste Forum” held this summer in Zenica.
